Poppy Cottage, Aldeburgh

Poppy Cottage was an amazing find. With an address on the High Street, it was part of a row of fisherman’s cottages tucked in behind the shops, yet it was so very quite you hardly knew you were in the center of a town. The place was very clean and decorated to a high standard with no visible wear to the furnishings or carpets. The kitchen had what we needed to prepare our own meals, which we did often given the nearby local fresh fish shops as well as numerous farm shops with good produce in the area. We recommend Reckford Roost in Middleton for produce and organic foods, and Emmerdale Farm for a fine butchers. It helped having a Co-Op nearby for buying basics . The bed was cozy and comfortable and the bathroom clean with a great shower – hot water instantly! The TV and wifi were appreciated for some evening entertainment but then we also indulged in reading from the bookshelf the numerous fascinating books and leaflets about the area. Though we didn’t need to use it, there was a washing machine & ironing board with iron available. You do have to think about parking. During the days from 9:00am you are limited to two hours parking on the High Street or you will need to use the pay carpark nearby. We didn’t have much of an issue with this as we spent our daytimes visiting the countryside and were able to park nearby for free after 6:00pm. Final recommendation: go for the smoked fish taster platter at Ash Smoked Fishes near the Moot Hall and for fish & chips, the Aldeburgh Fish & Chip shop was fantastic. I had a piece of beautifully crispy fried haddock the was bigger than my plate ! Overall it was a comfortable, stress free stay – our first holiday since the lockdown and we felt fortunate to find a place that made us feel welcomed.
