Customer Reviews
Our arrival at the property went without a hitch. All the directions given were 100% accurate. We were impressed by the beauty of the location and the property was very homely and fitted the setting. We met Mark the owner who gave us a bit of background information about grounds and various walks. The info in the booklets also helped walking locally. The Retreat is well positioned off the main road between Aldeburgh and Leiston. It’s not far from Snape and Orford. All in all we enjoyed our 3 night stay and found plenty of places to eat out. Equally we spent a Lot of our time around the property and grounds.

Outstanding property and surroundings. Lots of lovely walks and wildlife. The home included everything you could want on holiday and the owners were very friendly. We will be going again.
Lynne T – Jul 2024
Peaceful location, easy access by car to coast for walks and local pub for good food. Accommodation was comfortable and had everything we needed for an enjoyable stay.

Perfect getaway spot

We absolutely loved our stay and will definitely be back in the future. The children had a great time walking around the woods and grounds, highly recommend if you want somewhere to stay out of the way and want to get a bit of nature!

The cabin is wonderful and the walks are amazing. Sitting on the deck in the evening and watching the baby bats fly around was a first for us. The cabin was easy to find, had everything we needed and with the windows and doors wide open it was so light and airy it was like it was an extension of the deck. If you want to get back in touch with nature, this cabin is certainly a good place to start.

This was our second visit to The Retreat, this time in May instead of October. We felt it would be nice to see the area in a different season and it certainly exceeded our expectations.
On arrival it felt like we were home, we were provided with all the comforts yet practicalities once again that you could possibly wish for in a holiday accommodation. The wildlife we saw without leaving The Retreat was vast and varied, the highlight for us being blessed with 2 foxes extremely close to the decking. They were in no rush to leave and we watched them for a good 10 minutes before they scampered off. We walked into Thorpeness every day for the best hot chocolate from The Meare tearoom, treated ourselves to an excellent breakfast at The Kitchen, walked into Aldeburgh 3 times within the week, visited Woodbridge which was very pretty with a plentiful mixture of shops, lovely harbour and a good choice of eateries and took a trip to Sizewell to see the Black Redstart bird.
Our main interest is nature, trying to extend our knowledge and finding new birds or animals that we wouldn’t see at home in Norfolk. We absolutely love to spend our daytimes exploring the grounds of The Retreat and evenings staring up at the star filled night sky. We explore North Warren RSPB, woodland and surrounding areas. It is our time exclusively for us and it is extremely important for our well-being, so obviously it made sense to book again for next year !! Thank you so much to Conca and Mark for sharing their piece of paradise with us, we are already looking forward to May 2023 !

The Lodge is well appointed and comfortable. An ideal location for those interested in wildlife and walking or just for a peaceful break. This was our second visit but a different season which was really interesting. The area has numerous interesting places to visit either coastal or inland. Well worth a visit

It’s a lovely house, well equipped and very comfortable, set in a beautiful spot, with a marvellous view. Nice local walks through fields or by road to the coast – a perfect place for a weekend getaway.

Wonderful location fantastic Dark skies and wildlife. Great location for walks enjoying nature and accessing local RSPB reserves and coastal walks. Would recommend RSPB Minsmere, Aldeburgh, Rendlesham forest, Woodbridge, Snape Maltings. We could hear Bitterns booming from the property in the early morning. Muntjac and red deer wander in the garden. Make sure you go outside and look up at the stars on clear nights. We had a very tasty Sunday lunch at the Parrot and Punchbowl but do book in advance. The Retreat is very comfortable and relaxing the owners are very personable. We booked this Retreat because it had some many good reviews and would highly recommend it.

The Retreat, Aldringham. Lovely seaside and country locations on the doorstep. Shops are now re-opening so there was quite a lot of choice locally. The accommodation itself is just perfect. It is so chic, trendy, relaxed, cosy and warm. Everything is maintained to the very highest standard. The owners are lovely. Welcomed us by coming to call on us. Well, you just have to meet the donkeys. We sharpened the ends of two sticks to feed them apples and carrots so that we didn’t get our fingers nipped! There’s lots of other wildlife, too, and birds etc. The daffodils and snowdrops were still in bloom and the leaves were out on most trees. Climbing plants were coming into bud. Just so relaxing. You can go for lovely walks and not go off the property. Do you know, to be perfectly honest, you could stay in The Retreat and never go out and have a wonderful holiday. Loved the swing and the trampoline, even at our advanced ages.
Meander – May 2021
Our second time visiting the Retreat and it’s just wonderful. The cabin is ideal and the seclusion and quiet is lovely, but only a short drive to the pub or town. There are some lovely walks through the forest and feeding the donkeys is always a highlight for us. The local area is lovely and there is always plenty to do. We will be back.

The property is ideal if you want somewhere quiet and not bothered about driving to diff destinations.
